The Passing of Leonard Nimoy

Another great science fiction actor and icon from the Star Trek Universe has left us.  Leonard Nimoy, age 83, who played Mr, Spock in the original Star Trek series passed away today at this home.  He had been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for over a year and was hospitalized for it early this week.  Mr. Nimoy reprised the character in all the Star Trek movies based on the original series, plus episodes in the Star Trek: The Next Generation.  In recent years, he played an older Spock in the two J.J. Abrams Star Trek films.

Mr. Nimoy has inspired so many of us who enjoy sci-fi shows and showed his talents in different ways including poetry, music, and directing.  He directed two of the Star Trek movies and a comedy, Three Men and a Baby.

We wish you a fond farewell, Mr. Nimoy.  You have set upon a great new journey in the afterlife, but your legend and inspiration will always live long and prosper.  Rest in peace.

Latest Review for Crucible

It is just a little more than a month away from the release of Echoes, book three of The Epherium Chronicles, but strong reviews are still coming in for the previous installments in the series.  Here is the latest review posted to Amazon for Crucible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Full of high-tech action and surprising plot twistsFebruary 22, 2015
In this sequel to The Epherium Chronicles: Embrace, Earth Defense Forces dreadnaught Captain James Hood continues his mission to find and protect a nascent human colony in the Cygni system. The main threat is a brutal, insectoid race that kills humans with impunity but there are many unforeseen challenges awaiting the captain and his team.

The primary draw: military engagements both on the ground and in space that simply do not let up. The secondary draw: plot surprises you will never see coming.

Unlike some sequels this novel’s transition from Book 1 to Book 2 is pretty much seamless and readers would have no trouble picking up the tale as a standalone work (although I recommend reading the first book first.)

A small warning: don’t start this fast-paced book if you have something you need to do later because you will not want to put it down.

Note: The Kindle Book Review received a free copy of this book for an independent, fair, and honest review. We are not associated with the author or Amazon.

Five Years of the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory

Today marks the 5th year the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory has been watching the Sun and recording fantastic images for scientists at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to study.  I have met a few people on this project and worked with some who support the fantastic infrastructure at NASA GSFC that enables the transfer, storage and analysis of this data.

What we have learned about our Sun over the past five years is truly amazing.  To commemorate this 5 year anniversary, NASA has released this time lapse of images captured by the SDO satellite.  It is breath taking and I hope that all fans of science, space, science fiction, and technology enjoy it as much as I have.

The Epherium Chronicles: Echoes Chapter 2

The Epherium Chronicles series continues with the third installment, Echoes.

Book three of The Epherium Chronicles

The battle for Cygni colony may be over, but for Captain James Hood and the crew of the EDF Armstrong, the battle for humanity's future has just begun. Hood's defense of the remote outpost against the Cilik'ti aliens was magnificent, but without the timely help of an unlikely ally—a splinter tribe of humanity's bitter enemies—the colony would have been lost and the Armstrong destroyed.

An uneasy peace has prevailed ever since. But as the humans prepare for a crucial meeting, a desperately needed Earth supply convoy is attacked under mysterious circumstances, with the lead escort cruiser's captain disappearing even more mysteriously.

The fate of all of Earth's new colonies hangs in the balance, and Hood is charged with protecting them against growing threats from all sides. When rebellion and unrest challenge the very leadership of the Earth Defense Forces, Hood may need to go it alone…and make the ultimate sacrifice.

Here is the second chapter for Echoes which will be released on March 30, 2015.
