A thoroughly enjoyable read - the author has a nice, flowing and easy writing style as he moves from seamless descriptions of fold-space drives to crime scenes and much more. Wonderful and vivid characters walk the pages of this space opera from the quick-minded and intelligent Captain Hood, to the genetically altered Security Chief, Maya Greywalker. This book is a mixture of corporate conspiracy, sabotage, murder - with red herrings along the way - and a mission to see whether the colony ships that left 25 years ago are thriving. All in all a very good beginning.

WOW!!!! Wilson really amped up the action in Crucible. I really enjoyed the first book, Embrace - it bubbled away nicely laying the groundwork for the story setting and the development of the main characters; in Crucible, Wilson has stepped up the action, character development and the under-lying conspiracy that stretches up through the Epherium hierarchy. The action sequences on the planet and in space are tense, dramatic and described in such away that it unfolds in your mind. The Cilik'ti Chi'tan Shi (clan) are vicious and give no quarter to the human marines and colonists on the planet nor do they in space and the death toll rises on all sides. What I loved about Wilson's story is the quality of the character development - just when you think the imperturbable Captain Hood always holds it together, the author takes you sideways and you realize he has his fair share of weaknesses and fears. The plotting is solid, the action brilliant - battle scenes on the planet and in space had me sitting on the edge of my seat. The under-lying conspiracy simmers along and I expect we will learn more as the story progresses into book 3. I highly recommend the Epherium Chronicles.

In this sequel to The Epherium Chronicles: Embrace, Earth Defense Forces dreadnaught Captain James Hood continues his mission to find and protect a nascent human colony in the Cygni system. The main threat is a brutal, insectoid race that kills humans with impunity but there are many unforeseen challenges awaiting the captain and his team.

The primary draw: military engagements both on the ground and in space that simply do not let up. The secondary draw: plot surprises you will never see coming.

Unlike some sequels this novel’s transition from Book 1 to Book 2 is pretty much seamless and readers would have no trouble picking up the tale as a standalone work (although I recommend reading the first book first.)

A small warning: don’t start this fast-paced book if you have something you need to do later because you will not want to put it down.
